The Massachusetts State House, with its instantly recognizable golden dome, is centrally located in downtown Boston on Beacon Street, at the very top of Park Street. It is one of many stops along The Freedom Trail, a red-bricked 2.5-mile walking path that connects 16 historical landmarks throughout the city. It was designed by Charles Bulfinch, the leading architect of his time, and is a grand repository of history as well as an architectural treasure.
A cornerstone was laid by Samuel Adams in 1795, the dome was coppered by Paul Revere in 1802, and the marbled floors along with spacious ceremonial rooms are filled with works of art depicting the state’s unique heritage. Docents offer free walking tours of the building and collections from 10:00am — 3:30pm. Approximately 45 minutes. Meet in Doric Hall.
