Ausable Chasm is often referred to as ‘The Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks.’ Open since 1870, it is the oldest and largest natural attraction in the Adirondack region. The chasm was formed from sandstone 500 million years old, from what geologists cite as the Cambrian period. Ausable Chasm offers trails that allow visitors to view sites like the Rainbow Falls, Elephant’s Head, and the Grand Flume. Experienced guides maneuver floats along the water. Guests are invited to attend nighttime lantern tours, try their hand at rappelling or rock climbing, even stay overnight at the campground nearby.
