The Black Heritage Trail is a 1.6 mile walking tour that explores the rich history of the city’s 19th-century African American community who primarily resided on the north slope of Boston’s Beacon Hill.
The walk includes fourteen historic sites; including homes, schools, businesses, churches, and several stops along the Underground Railroad – a network which helped escaped slaves fleeing from the South to freedom in the North and further on into Canada.
It is the largest collection of historic sites that bring attention to life within a free Black community prior to the Civil War.
The historic homes on the trail are private residences and cannot be accessed. Visitors can enter The Abiel Smith School and the African Meeting House.
